Question: The active human stomach has a pH of approximately 1.5! Sodium bicarbonate is released into the small intestine (from the pancreas) as food moves through the digestive system. Describe what the sodium bicarbonate must be used for, and explain what could happen if not enough was released into the food mixture as it leaves the stomach and enters the intestines. Edit
Answer: Sodium bicarbonate helps to control acid-base balance, blood pH level and bicarbonate concentration in the biological fluids. It neutralizes gastric acid and other acidic material from the stomach. It also decreases acidity of dietary components like proteins.
Less secretion of sodium bicarbonate results in gastric acid to remain in the system and that may be a reason for gastric ulcer.
