Find the volume of a circular cone whose height is 3 cm and slant length is 5 cm.

Solution: Let OB, VB and VO be the radius of the base, slant height and height of the cone.

VO2 = VB2 - VO2 = 52 - 32 = 16

Therefore, VO = 4, i.e. r = 4 cm

Area of base = Π r2 = Π x 42 = 16 Π cm2

Volume of cone = 1/3 Π r2 h = = 1/3 x 16 Π x 3 = 16 Π

= 16 x 3.142 = 50.3 cm2
