Robin has $ 9,500 more than Donald. If Donald gives $ 2,000 to Robin, the money with Robin will be four times
that with Donald. Find the money initially with Robin and Donald.

Solution:

Let the money originally with Donald = $ x

Therefore, the money with Robin = $ (x + 9,500)

When Donald gives $ 2,000 to Robin,

the money left with Donald = $ (x - 2,000)

and, the money with Robin = $ (x + 9,500 + 2,000)

= $ (x + 11,500)

Given, x + 11,500 = 4 (x - 2,000)

=> x + 11,500 = 4x - 8,000

i.e. 11,500 + 8,000 = 4 x - x

=> 19,500 = 3 x

=> x = 19,500 / 3 = 6,500

Therefore, the money initially with Robin and Donald

= $ (x + 9,500) and $ x

= $ (6,500 + 9,500) and $ 6,500

= $ 16,000 and $ 6,500
