A point A is on a mountain which is 3786 m above sea-level and a point B is in a mine which is 894 m below sea level.
What is the vertical distance between A and B?

Solution: Let us consider a point O at the sea level.

Then height OA = 3786 m

and height OB = -894 m

Therefore, required distance = OA - OB

= (+3786) - (-894) m

= (3786 + 894) m

= 4680 m
