Mensuration-14

A vessel is in the form of a hemispherical bowl mounted by a hollow cylinder.
The diameter of the sphere is 24 cm and the total height of the vessel is 28 cm.
Find its capacity.
Solution: Radius of the hemispherical bowl = 12 cm
Height of the cylinder = 28 - 12 = 16 cm
Capacity = volume of cylindrical part + volume of hemispherical part
= π r2 h + 2/3 x π r3
= (π x 12 x 12 x 16) + (2/3 x π x 12 x 12 x 12)
= π x 2304 + π x 1152 cm3
= 3456 x 22/7 = 10861-5/7 cu. cm
