A memorial is in the form of a cylinder surmounted by a hemisphere. The diameter of
the sphere is 20 m and the total height of the memorial is 28 m. Find the surface area.
Solution: The curved surface area of the cylindrical portion = 2 π r h
= 2 x 22/7 x 10 x 28 sq. m
= 1760 sq. m
The surface area of the hemisphere = 2 π r2
= 2 x 22/7 x 10 x 10
= 4400/7 sq. m
The surface area of the memorial = 1760 + 4400/7 = 2388-4/7 sq. m
